Duncan Kinuthia - Founder, Basic

Duncan Kinuthia (DK 111) is a serial entrepreneur, Founder of the Quickmart chain of supermarkets; Kenya’s second largest retailer with a store footprint of 60 outlets spread across 16 counties and employing over 7000 Kenyans.

Following the success of the retail chain, he has since ventured into the real estate field with a brand “Basic-Make It Easy “being the pioneer of the “Strip Mall “concept, transforming the face of commercial real estate in Kenya. From inception in 2021, Basic has developed a number hugely successful projects; Thome, Kileleshwa, Nyali and Narok and continues to venture into new locations across the country.

The Basic developments represent a shift in the convenience retail shopping landscape, redefining the way people approach their retail experiences. This is achieved by blending the convenience of a street market with the infrastructure of a shopping mall.

The concept provides conveniently located malls with modern, bespoke amenities and a good tenant mix that provide the shopper with everything they require all at one location. Basic has supported tenants who represent; Banks, Pharmacies, Fashion & Apparel, Furniture & Beddings, Restaurants, Offices and an anchor strategic partner being Quickmart with close to 15 locations with the unique value proposition of Free Parking.

Shoppers can enjoy the open-air market feel while benefiting from the organized, mall structure. This fusion not only enhances the shopping experience but also introduces a new level of accessibility, choice, and engagement for consumers.
Ultimately, the Basic developments break down the boundaries between these two shopping concepts.

DK 111 as he’s fondly referred to is a stickler for detail and his focus on perfection is weaved into the very design and outlook for Basic.
